I've often wondered exactly how severe is Congress's case of historical amnesia. In late 2005 we found out that many members of Congress clearly couldn't remember anything previous to 1980, as witnessed by their call for 1970s-type price controls on oil. But last week we learned that Congress's historical amnesia is much worse than anyone feared. Clearly it extends back to as recently as the early 1990s.

Nineteen-ninety was the dreadful year in which President George H.W. Bush abandoned his "Read my lips, no new taxes" pledge to cut a deal with Congressional Democrats to increase taxes. Among the new taxes created by that deal was an excise tax on "luxury items." This "luxury tax" was imposed on goods such as jewelry, furs, and yachts. It was subsequently repealed in 1993 after proving to be nothing short of an economic and policy disaster.

Unfortunately, Congress never bothered to consider that increasing the tax on these items, and thereby increasing the price of those items, might change the behavior of said rich people. (Indeed, many members of Congress stubbornly refuse to ever acknowledge that taxes ever affect behavior.) But said rich people had other ideas. If the price of jewelry, furs, and yachts suddenly increased, then maybe purchasing a winter home in Florida seemed like a much better deal. Or maybe those rich people would take a shopping trip to other parts of the world, where the price of jewelry, furs, and yachts were now much more competitive thanks to the U.S. Congress. Contiued

The latest character on the children’s show Tomorrow’s Pioneers on Hamas’s Al-Aqsa television station is Nahool the Bee, who encourages young children to follow “[the path] of Jihad” and to become "Jihad warriors" in order to "liberate Al-Aqsa from the filth of the criminal Jews."

Recently, footage was shown on Hamas TV of Arab children graduating from a kindergarten in Gaza. In the video, the children are seen marching in formation while holding machine guns and then dropping to the floor, crawling on their bellies and vowing to become terrorists when they grow up.

Sawyer Learns The Truth Hurts
On Good Morning America last Thursday, Diane Sawyer showed the isolation liberal media types live in. In a personal aside to a story about people who avoid jury duty, she said: “You know, I wanted to sit on a jury once and I was taken off the jury. And the judge said to me, ‘Can, you know, can you tell the truth and be fair?’ And I said, ‘That’s what journalists do.’
And everybody in the courtroom laughed.
It was the most hurtful moment I think I’ve ever had.”

One-Child ‘Terror Campaign’ Continues in China

Clinton Hypocrisy Pardon Me But,

Anybody who watched presidential spokesman Tony Snow face a pack of snarling White House press corps correspondents following President Bush’s commutation of Scooter Libby’s prison sentence will understand the meaning of the word hypocrisy

These are the very same media hacks who turned a blind eye to Clintonista Sandy Berger stuffing national security documents in his socks, stealing them from the National Archives and destroying them and then getting nothing more in the way of punishment than a mere slap on the wrist.

Then there was Mrs. Hillary Clinton, who had the gall to issue a statement saying, "Today's decision is yet another example that this Administration simply considers itself above the law. This case arose from the Administration's politicization of national security intelligence and its efforts to punish those who spoke out against its policies. Four years into the Iraq war, Americans are still living with the consequences of this White House's efforts to quell dissent. This commutation sends the clear signal that in this Administration, cronyism and ideology trump competence and justice."

Said Tony Snow: "I don't know what Arkansan is for chutzpah, but this is a gigantic case of it."

Here, after all, is the wife of a president who all but peddled pardons to an assortment of felons and miscreants including one malodorous fugitive from justice who had renounced his American citizenship.

The Clintons' Cronyism Circus
Former President Bill Clinton and Sen. Hillary Clinton are absolutely outraged that President Bush granted executive clemency to Scooter Libby, recently convicted of making false statements under oath.

They obviously believe that Libby should serve his 30 month sentence.

Does that mean that they now think that perjurers should go to jail? Or have they simply forgotten about Bill Clinton's own plea agreement in the last hours of his presidency — for making false statements under oath?

Some people would call that perjury.
